Improve Road Safety with 3D Crosswalks

From "Proposals: empower your community to drive change"

Go to the project

Dangerous intersections and poorly marked crosswalks can lead to accidents and safety concerns for pedestrians. This proposal suggests the implementation of 3D-painted crosswalks that create the illusion of an obstacle, prompting drivers to slow down when approaching. Several studies have shown that 3D crosswalks can significantly reduce accidents.

By making crosswalks more visible and drivers more cautious, this low-cost solution can improve pedestrian safety in key areas of the community.

I've seen these in a few other cities, and they seem to work well. But I’d like to suggest that we pilot the 3D crosswalks in one or two key locations first, and then gather feedback from residents and drivers before rolling them out citywide. We should also make sure the design is inclusive—thinking about things like color contrast and visibility for people with visual impairments.

3D crosswalks are a really creative solution to improve road safety, and I think they could be especially effective near schools and parks where there’s a lot of pedestrian traffic. However, I think we should also consider accompanying measures, like adding pedestrian countdown timers and better lighting. It’s important to make sure drivers have plenty of time to see the crosswalks and slow down safely.
